An Iranian missile struck a shelter in Beit Shemesh today in a direct hit. At least nine people were killed and 51 wounded. The warhead contained half a ton of explosives. The missile hit a synagogue that collapsed onto the shelter beneath it. Eight buildings in the complex were almost entirely destroyed. The search for the missing continues tonight.
I arrived in Beit Shemesh and as I made my way down toward the site of the strike, I walked alongside a woman whose home had been damaged. Between the houses I entered to photograph, I learned that many residents had gone down to the shelter because their apartments have no safe room - and ironically, those who stayed in their homes survived, even though they were not in protected spaces.
